The bulk of such materials is insulating but the surface can conduct electric current with well-defined spin texture. In this way, Bi 1 Te 1 consisting of Bi 2 Te 3 and Bi 2 layers is identified as a dual topological insulator, combining a weak topological insulator and a topological crystalline insulator phase.

Spin-valley–polarized one-way Klein tunneling in TRS-invariant photonic topological insulator We switch now to the TRS-invariant photonic crystal in Fig. 1B . Topological insulators are new states of quantum matter which cannot be adiabatically connected to conventional insulators and semiconductors. They are characterized by a full insulating gap in the bulk and gapless edge or surface states which are protected by time-reversal symmetry.

Ando, Y. Topological insulator materials.

The two-dimensional (2D) topological insulator is a quantum spin Hall insulator, which is a close cousin of the integer quantum Hall state. Topological insulators are materials with a bulk excitation gap generated by the spin-orbit interaction that are different from conventional insulators. This distinction is characterized by Z 2 topological invariants, which characterize the ground state. In two dimensions, there is a single Z 2 invariant that distinguishes the ordinary the class of materials now known as topological insulators (TI’s) can be achieved on the basis of a picture of noninteracting electrons subject to a particular kind of band structure, which generally speaking involves nontrivial e ects of the spin-orbit interaction (SOI). Magnetic topological insulators enable the investigation of the interplay between magnetism and topological electronic states. Materials known as topological insulators have the unusual property of being able to conduct electricity on their surface even though they are insulators inside.
